故事发生在二十世纪二十年代的英国伦敦，一场凶杀案的发生震惊了全城上下。死者为美丽而又富有的千金艾米丽（金·凯特罗尔 Kim Cattrall 饰），她的管家珍妮特（莫妮卡·杜兰 Monica Dolan 饰）指控一位名叫雷纳德（比利·霍尔 Billy Howle 饰）的男子为凶手，并生成艾米丽在生前将自己的全部财产都留给了雷纳德，他杀死艾米丽有着非常充分的动机。
梅秀（托比·琼斯 Toby Jones 饰）被指派成为了雷纳德的辩护律师，刚开始，他并不相信自己的委托人是清白的，但随着对雷纳德了解的加深，梅秀渐渐被这位年轻人的真诚给打动了。雷纳德告诉梅秀自己有不在场证明。
